Hey! We’re WalkSafe, an initiative to promote pedestrian safety in local St. Pete neighborhoods. As high schoolers, all three of us have personally seen how dangerous some roads in St Pete can be for pedestrians, whether that be from walking across busy streets in the morning to reach a bus stop, or running around a local park for fun. In each of our neighborhoods, we’ve noticed that there is a lack of safety measures taken on busy roads (crosswalks, stop signs, etc..) and because of that, some drivers neglect to watch out for children and other pedestrians, causing large safety issues for areas with large youth populations. Our goal in this project is to first and foremost raise awareness of these issues to drivers who can hopefully be more careful in neighborhood areas, and secondly to create and fill a petition that will encourage local government to install more protective measures around busy neighborhood streets.
